Center of Melanesian Studies

Mission Statement

The Center for Melanesian Studies will strive towards validating other knowledge forms, through appropriate research methodologies, and set appropriate Institutional Aims and Objectives, Course  and Course materials that will promote diversity by valuing the ways-of-knowing that are characteristics of various cultures in Melanesia.

Functions of the Center

In fulfilling its mission the Center for Melanesian Studies will be guided by the following functions.

  • Promoting interdisciplinary, participatory research and cooperative problem solving between communities and academic institutions.
  • Enhancing locally-appropriate development efforts in the communities.
  • Identifying and compiling resources/clearing houses for Indigenous Knowledge.
  • Encouraging interaction between indigenous epistemologies and western epistemologies for the purpose of finding new methods to produce and reproduce knowledge.

Life Skills & Study Support Center

Mission Statement

Pursuant to the the UOG's new program structure this center aims to promote and support the young teachers with not only the the skills and knowledge to teach but on how to live as a teacher. The mission is to produce educators who are socially and culturally responsible in their ethics and values.

Course Description

The course of Life Skills, through workshops, group discussion and sharing, role play and reflection will introduce to their importance and significance of their own emotional, social and spiritual aspects as individual persons and their relationship with others around them. The focus will be on personal values and beliefs and through this guide and facilitate students to recognize their own sense of identity and national identity and their personal privileges and rights and at the same time their social obligations and responsibilities.
