Expressive Arts

Academic Programs

Our Mission is to enable students to develop literacies in the selected areas of study in the Creative Industries as a way to assist them to participate in and develop lifelong interest in the arts and to further  broaden their understanding of and involvement in the arts in Papua New Guinea.

Expressive Arts is part of the Expressive Arts and Religious Education Department and is a section. It currently has a staff strength of three fulltime staff positions and two temporary staff positions.  Its major strands are; (i) Visual Arts, (ii) Dance and Drama, (iii) Music and (iv) Fine Arts.  The Department is planning to offer a new program called Diploma in Creative Arts. This new program is set to be offered in 2006 and is response to the UOG's vision and mission change.

Expressive Arts  offers courses in Visual Arts, Music, Dance and Drama. Opportunities shall be provided to students to major or minor in Expressive Arts. The Department also offers a post vocational one year program leading to a diploma in teaching (Expressive Arts ), B.Ed In-Service (EA) and PGDE.


Diploma of Creative Industries

OBJECTIVES OF THE DIPLOMA OF CREATIVE INDUSTRIES

  • To enable students to develop literacy’s in the selected areas of study in the Creative Industries
  • To assist students to participate in and develop lifelong interest in the arts
  • To broaden understanding of and involvement in the arts in Papua New Guinea.

The Diploma of Creative Industries is a two-year full time course specifically designed for those with a professional interest and involvement in the arts and who wish to develop their knowledge and skills further in the history and theory of arts and in practical arts making/production/performance.

The course is particularly designed for candidates who have completed Grade 12 with a major study in a discipline in the creative industries (Visual Arts, Music, Performing Arts). Candidates who have had previous training at certificate level and have developed professional expertise in the arts and who wish to further consolidate their professional expertise as arts practitioners can also apply.

Course Duration
The course is scheduled over four semesters (full-time) and students who expect to complete the course will be expected to complete two subjects per semester for the first three semesters and then three subjects in the final semester.

Prerequisites
Grade 12 or equivalent

Entry Requirements
In addition to documentation and proof of completion of education and experience candidates will be expected to provide a folio of work and/or audition prior to acceptance into the course. Acceptance and consideration of folio and/or audition does not guarantee entry into the course.

Prior Knowledge
Candidates who have had experience in a subject area prior to enrolling for the Diploma course may apply for credits for selected subjects. The department will consider applications for crediting of prior knowledge in the beginning of each academic year.  Forms to apply for credit can be obtained from the department secretary.

Certificate Qualification
Candidates can, after the initial two semesters of studies, after completion of requirements can exit the course of study in the field with a Certificate of Expressive Arts. Continuation into the second year of the diploma will be determined by students’ GPA (Using current assessment rules). Students who exit with a Certificate can re-apply for admission into the Diploma course after two years in the field demonstrating a useful and successful experience in the subject area.

Diploma in Teaching (Expressive Arts)
Candidates who successfully complete the course can, if interested in a teaching career, can lodge an application for enrolment for the course. Candidates will be selected with a recommended GPA score (Using current assessment rules) in the final year of studies in the Diploma of Expressive Arts.
