Dean's Message
On behalf of the faculty I wish to welcome all current students, potential students, faculty staff and other stake holders who are viewing these pages of the faculty homepage. In the last decade up till now there has been tremendous technological advancements never imagined before. One such is the internet which has made it possible for enormous amounts of data to be transferred or exchanged within seconds. I am now pleased to be able to publish these few messages using this technology.
The Humanities Faculty consists of Language and Literature, Social Science, Commerce, Expressive Arts and Religious Education - a total of six key content/subject areas. Through these subject areas the faculty is committed to provide a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses offering a teaching and learning environment of a high standard. This knowledge consolidated with the skills, attitudes and specific methodologies of those subject areas will enable students to teach in Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific Education Systems. The programs are an essential part of the faculty's role in achieving its objective for excellence and be competitive with other higher education institutions in PNG.
The programs offered in the faculty are geared towards attracting and preparing high achieving students to help them make the University of Goroka their academic home. It strives to produce quality graduates in the fields of Language and Literature, Social Science, Commerce, Expressive Arts and Religious Education.
A promotion of the uniqueness of Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific cultural heritage will be pursued through the content of courses such as Languages, Arts, Beliefs, Commerce and the Natural Environment. The uniqueness in the cultural heritage will be strengthened further through the establishment of the center for Melanesian Studies within the faculty.
Intakes into our programs are usually grade 12 graduates from National High Schools, Upper Secondary Schools, Distance Education or from recognised institutions offering matriculation studies. In addition, the faculty runs in-service courses for teachers already in the teaching fields from both the Primary and Secondary Schools.
The Pre-Service degree is normally a four year program with courses ranging from levels 1 - 4. Candidates admitted into the Pre-Service programs take courses within the faculty. The In-Service degree in both Primary and Secondary is a two-year program. The secondary in-service fits into the four-year Pre-Service program at the appropriate level, while the Primary In-Service fits into their own programs developed and made available in the faculty to cater for their needs.
On behalf of the faculty I wish you all the best in the years of your study in the Humanities Faculty at the University of Goroka.
Mr. David Away Hosea
Dean - Humanities Faculty.
