Home Economics

Academic Programs

Home Economics is an applied field of study based on principles derived from the social and natural sciences and the arts. The focus is on the individual and the family, with an emphasis on the acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitudes that have application throughout life in a rapidly changing society. The impact of technologies upon people, societies and the environment is of increasing concern within home economics. Students are encouraged to see the 'interconnectedness' of all areas of life, with home economics well placed to do this because it draws from so many disciplines. There is a strong emphasis on a holistic and integrated approach to the field of study, with a major aim to encourage the development of the capacity for critical reflection in students. Courses are arranged in such a way that there will be a logical and sequential, yet spiraling development of knowledge and skills, moving from the individual to the family, and then to the environment level. At level four (4) students are encouraged to take a global perspective and to reflect on the impact of individual and family decisions and practices.
