Physical Education

Academic Programs

The aim of the Physical Education is to prepare Physical Educators who will be empowered to deliver culturally appropriate Physical Education programs throughout PNG and the South Pacific region.

The Physical Educations Department offers courses on site at the National Sports Institute (NSI), situated in the western part of the township of Goroka, approximately ten to fifteen minutes drive from UoG car park. It was established in 1970 with the sole function of promoting and developing sports in PNG. In 1982 the Institute was charged with the additional function of carrying out Physical Education teacher education programs for high school teachers. In 2003 the NSI signed a revised MOU with the UoG to solidify that relationship and to develop further.

The goals of the physical education program are to prepare physical education teachers who have an understanding of the physical, social, psychological, emotional and mental benefits of physical education. They will be able to function effectively in their roles as teachers, as well as being able to organise and develop sport and recreational programs in their schools and communities throughout PNG and the South Pacific Region.

Students taking Physical Education as a subject will select courses as prescribed by the department. Students are also encouraged to select courses from other Departments and Sections of the Faculty to supplement their specialisation in Physical Education.
