The University of Goroka has a new three storey Library building. It is the largest ever built in Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific. It serves the information needs for students and staff of the University. It also provides library services for external users.

The Library has a collection of 100,000 volumes of monographs, 400 serials, 1000 video recordings and several thousand slides.

The Library is open from 8AM to 10PM daily, except on Fridays when services are closed at 4PM. Weekend opening hours are 1PM to 6PM.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The University of Goroka Library was established in 1967 under the former Goroka Teacher’s College, offering a three year program for in-service and pre-service secondary teachers. Though the college may have been established in 1962, there was no mention of a library set up until 1967.

In 1975, the Goroka Teacher’s College was affiliated with the University of Papua New Guinea under the then Education Faculty. After so many years serving as another faculty of UPNG, a new act (the University of Goroka Act 1997) was passed in parliament for the establishment of the University of Goroka becoming a fully fledged university in 1997.

The base collections of the current UOG Library’s holdings are mainly books in education, transferred from the University of Papua New Guinea Library in 1996. The volume of the collection total is just over 100, 000 items of which 95% are printed documents such as books, pamphlets, articles and journal articles etc.

WELCOME TO THE STEVEN EKA LIBRARY:

The new Steven Eka Library building was built with funding from the Papua New Guinea National government in 2004. It is named after the first University Chancellor since the establishment of the University in 1997.

The building is of high architectural design and is considered one of the best and biggest library buildings in the South Pacific region. It is a 3 storey building designed to cater for the University’s information needs as well as the future development of its print and electronic collections.

It has a seating capacity of well over 300 users on the ground floor and the first floor respectively. The second floor accommodates 12 study carrels for the Post Graduate students and a new computer Internet Search laboratory for the Under Graduate as well as Post Graduate students.

MAIN LIBRARY COLLECTIONS:

With the latest state of the art design, the Library consists of both print and electronic items. The Library includes several major collections: the General collection, Periodicals collection, RPNG collection, Reference collection, Special Reserve collection and the Audio-Visual collection. The collections are basically built around the various programs and courses taught by the University; specifically in the fields listed below:

  • Education:
including Education Foundations, Curriculum and Teaching.
  • Humanities:
including Expressive Arts, Religious Education studies, Life Skills, Language and Literature and Social Science and Commerce.
  • Science:
including Agriculture, Health, Home Economics, Design and Technology, Technical and Vocational Education and Mathematics and Computing.

General Collection:
The General Collection is the largest collection in the Library. It consists of textbooks on various subjects or disciplines to support programs offered by the University of Goroka.

The section also provides a small collection of novels for students, especially those enrolled in the Language and Language courses as well as the general public.
All materials in the General Collection are available for loan.

PNGR - Papua New Guinea Reference and Special Reserve Collection:
The PNGR Collection is fundamental in local and academic research and is a closed access collection.  It includes books and journals with Papua New Guinea contents and published articles on various issues affecting the country.

This section also collects post graduate dissertations, theses and research publications by University academics and post graduate students.

The Special Reserve Collection comprises of recommended text books and photocopied articles by lecturers for consultation by students in a particular discipline.  It is located on the ground floor in close access behind the circulation counter.

Audio-Visual (AV) Collection:
The Audio-Visual Collection consists of electronic materials mostly comprised of video tapes, DVDs and compact disks (CDs) is located on the ground floor.  Most of these materials are educational and are acquired to complement the various courses taught at the University in specific disciplines.  Apart from the educational materials, there is a small video collection of feature films for entertainment purposes.  Future plans are in place to acquire more educational and documentary electronic items to complement all the courses taught and run by the University.  Specific disciplines are encouraged to recommend audio-visual aids required to compliment lectures.

A viewing room is available for students and staff who may wish to view their tapes, compact disks or DVDs during the Library’s opening hours.  The room is self contained with a multi-viewing screen that enables viewers to watch in either format.  It has a seating capacity for about 50 people.  External users or institutions in the Eastern Highlands are encouraged to use the room at a minimal fee.

Periodicals Collection:
The Periodical or Journals Collection is located on the first floor of the building.  Back issues of journals are shelved next to the Reference Collection.  New editions are normally displayed for about 2 weeks before they are shelved on the closed access shelves.  Upon request by users they are issued for use only in the Library.  Plans are underway for the University to subscribe to publishers of electronic journals.

Reference Collection:
The Reference Collection is located on the first floor of the Library building.  Like any other libraries the collection is comprised of materials such as encyclopaedias, indexes, dictionaries, yearbooks and University course handbooks etc.  Though the current collection is small in size there are plans to expand and widen its scope to cover all programs and courses currently taught by the University of Goroka and other sister universities throughout Papua New Guinea.

Library Automation:
On the last date of November 2009, the Library records were fully converted from an old system to Liberty 4, a new Library Management Software, a product of Softlink Pacific (NZ). Comparatively the new system is web based and has more functions and features to serve the needs of both Library staff and library users.

Currently ten search computer terminals are available for users to search the library holdings.  They are located immediately after the circulation area on the ground floor. Due to the users demands, the Library Management plans to increase the search terminals in 2010 and have some placed on the first floor of the library building.
