In the beginning the Library served the Teacher Training College established in 1962 catering to the Primary school teachers. In 1975 the college was transferred to the University of Papua New Guinea from the Teacher Education Division of the Ministry of Education. Since then the college functioned as a Campus of the UPNG until 1997 when it became a full-fledged university. (University of Goroka Act 1997.)
University of Goroka is the second largest library in the country with a stock of over 100,000 volumes of monographs, 400 periodical titles, 1000 video tapes and several thousands of slides and audio-cassettes. All materials are organized by the DDC catalogued by AACR and LCSH. Library catalogue is available on-line.

For purposes of convenience of use and management the collection is subdivided into:
All books in this collection are available for borrowing
Reference collection. All materials in this collection are for reference only within the library. It comprises of Encyclopaedias, dictionaries, atlases, yearbooks and directories and a number of handbooks from colleges and universities from PNG and overseas.
PNG Research collection. This is a collection of books and journals and journal articles related to Melanesian studies. It contains some of the rarest publications on PNG. These materials are not loaned but may be read within the library.

This is the undergraduate text book collection; books basically recommended by the lecturers for reading and research. These books are issued to students for a limited period of time, usually less than 12 hours a day. Students are expected to surrender their ID cards to borrow books from this collection.

Library receives regularly 400 titles of periodicals and newspapers. The current issues of a periodical are displayed while back issues are stored and retained for at least 12 months. Due to storage problems past issues are discarded after one year!

Library has a large collection of novels; most of the best-known writers are represented in the collection. This collection is open to all readers but is used mainly by the Language and Literature students. The collection is housed separated from the main collection due to lack of storage space.

Library has built up over the years a collection of postgraduate dissertations by the University staff. Readers have limited access this collection.

Library provides the following services to the academic community: Loans, Reservations, Inter-library loans, Reading and browsing facilities, photocopying, Information services, research assistance, and printing.
