Biography

Dr Philip Joseph is basically of Syrian origin who strictly observes and practices endogamy. Born and brought up in India, Dr Philip is now permanently settled in New Zealand. He acquired his BA degree in Politics from St Thomas’ College, Palai and M A degree in Politics (specialized in Organization & Management) from Maharajas College, Ernakulum affiliated to the University of Kerala, India. He obtained his BEd degree from St Xavier’s Institute of Education affiliated to the University of Bombay, India and began his career as an upper secondary school teacher in Nigeria, West Africa. He then had stints in Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu. He received his MEd, MPhil and PhD in Educational Management from the University of Madras, India. He served as the Principal of PKM College of Education (Secondary), affiliated to the University of Calicut in India. On a UNDP assignment, he served in the University of Asmara in Eritrea, North - East Africa as an Assistant Professor, HOD of Educational Administration in the Faculty of Education and member of the academic senate. 


Dr Philip is an approved PhD supervisor in UOG and as such currently two full-time PhD research scholars in Education are under his guidance. He is also a member of the panels of PhD theses Examination Boards in various overseas universities and so far he has examined sixteen PhD theses submitted to various universities around the world.

Dr Philip has presented papers in international conferences in Brisbane, Goroka, Kuala Lumpur and Osaka and has published research papers extensively. He has authored two books on educational leadership and management through VDM Publishers and Lambert Academic Publishers in Germany.

Dr Philip was conferred the Asia Pacific Award for the best paper presented in the Asia Pacific Conference on Educational Management and Leadership (APCEMal 2011) hosted by the Sultan Idris Pendidikan University, Malaysia which was held from 29 November to 1 December 2011 in Kuala Lumpur. The award carried a citation and a plaque. Now he has entered into the final stage of writing a book on Governance of Education in Papua New Guinea with his colleague Ms Theresa Lomoi as the co-author.

Currently Dr Philip Joseph is serving as the HOD of Educational Leadership and Management, Social Development and Gender Studies (DELM, SDGS) in the School of Education: member of the Academic Senate and Chairman of the School of Education Research and Publications Committee and SOE representative at the University Research and Publications Committee (URPC) in the University of Goroka in Papua New Guinea. He was also the elected academics representative in the UOG Governing Council from 2013 to 2015.
