Program Overview

This certificate program is aimed at those who wish to acquire skills and knowledge in the area of Sport & Recreation Management. The course provides an opportunity for individuals to work in the sport and recreation industry in areas such as planning and conducting recreation programs and maintaining sport and recreation facilities and equipment.
It also provides for multi-skilled roles which combine a range of activities required to support the operation of facilities such as fitness centres, outdoor sporting grounds and community recreation centres. Students will gain the skills to deliver sport and recreation activities and learn how to manage recreation activities.
Potential clients for this program are the Provincial Recreation Officers and those in the districts who wish to start a career in Sport & Recreation Management and also the corporate clients from the mining sector, and the Tourism industry as well.

Minimum Entry Requirements

Candidates must have successfully completed Grade 12 or equivalent. In addition, they may provide evidence of Recognition of Prior Learning including sports courses attended in the last two years, and must also be practicing in their fields of specialty. Furthermore those currently employed and performing roles as sports and recreation officers or as sports development officers without any qualification in Sport or Physical Education shall be considered.

This certificate is not accredited to any professional bodies but will be recognized by the sporting industry and PNG Sports Foundation. Career opportunities include positions such as Recreation Officers under the Community Development Department, recreation planners in corporate organisations. This program is a pre-requisite to Certificate IV in Sport & Recreation Management which can lead directly to a Bachelor’s degree.

Certificate III in Sport Coaching

Program Overview

The Sports Coaching certificate program is designed to provide individuals with skills and knowledge and professional growth in the area of coaching. The program has been developed to assist coaches and beginner coaches to learn the basic skills of coaching at all levels. The skills and knowledge gained will enable graduates of this course to work with athletes at club level in their communities. The units also provide opportunities to apply the learning specifically to the coaching setting. It is a generic program that introduces the basic concepts of coaching.
Targeted for this course are the Sports Development officers and others in the community who aspire to coach sports teams in the country. Those wanting to specialize in coaching a specific sport will be directed to the National Sporting Federations who can then offer sports specific coaching courses usually accredited and licensed by the respective International Federations.

Candidates must have successfully completed Grade 12 or equivalent. In addition, they may provide evidence of Recognition of Prior Learning including sports courses attended in the last two years, and must also be practicing in their fields of specialty. Furthermore those currently employed and performing roles as sports development officers, PE teachers without any qualification in Sport or similar shall be considered.

Program Overview

This short course is intended for Elementary and Primary School Teachers who currently teach a physical education curriculum in their schools. The course develops and enhances content knowledge to support the teaching of Physical Education (PE). It covers a range of foundation courses that form the basis for further education in the area of PE. Units such as Fundamental Human Movement, How the Body works and Athletics will provide clients with significant knowledge and skills that will certainly create an appreciation of what the human body is capable of doing in terms of movement development.

Minimum Entry Requirements

Candidates must have successfully completed Grade 12 or equivalent. In addition, they may provide evidence of Recognition of Prior Learning including sports courses attended in the last two years, and must also be practicing in their fields of specialty. Furthermore those currently employed and performing roles as sports and recreation officers or as sports development officers without any qualification in Sport or Physical Education shall be considered.

Program Overview

This program is intended for teachers who currently teach a physical education curriculum in their schools without formal training in this specialized area. The nature of the program also attracts post vocational clients especially from the disciplined forces who relate the learning to their physical training programs for new recruits. The course develops and enhances content knowledge to enhance the experience and support the teaching of Physical Education (PE). It incorporates both the science and art of teaching PE and the content knowledge around the human body. The courses are covered over two semesters and will provide clients with significant knowledge, skills and values that will certainly create an appreciation of what the human body is capable of doing in terms of movement development.

Minimum Entry Requirements 

Candidates must have successfully completed Grade 12 or equivalent.
