Post Graduate Studies

The continuation and development of post graduate programs are an essential part of the University of Goroka's education mission in Papua New Guinea. The programs offered are:

  • Bachelor of Education with Honours (B.Ed Hons)
  • Master of Education (MEd)
  • Master of Education with Honours (MEd Hons)
  • Graduate Diploma in Education (GDE)
  • Doctor of Philosophy by Research (PhD.)

These programs are based within the Faculty of Education and draw upon the expertise of highly qualified staff specialising in Curriculum Studies, Educational Administration, and Teaching & Teacher Education. Academic Staff from the Faculties of Humanities and Science are involved in the conduct of courses and in thesis supervision and examination. This collaborative approach provides diversity in specialist subject areas and research methodology.

The flexible structure of the programs offers candidates a range of choice according to their educational and professional background and their particular professional and study interests.

The new BEdHons, MEd and MEdHons programs are mainly conducted through coursework, although students the the option of undertaking research theses within them. These programs are undertaken in a modular fashion, each degree equivalent to two semesters of full time study. Students may also undertake a three-year full time PhD purely by research.

The programs can be taken full time or part time in the two semesters of the normal academic year (January - June - October), part time by Lahara (October - December) or by a combination of semester and lahara study.


Introduction

Administrative responsibility for postgraduate studies is currently undertaken by the school of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS) established by Council in 2007.  SPGS is the central university body for policy formulation, administration and monitoring of postgraduate studies at UOG.

For postgraduate studies, SPGS mainly administers and reviews programmes and policies as and when it is referred to by Academic Board or Faculties.

Postgraduate Studies Mission:
“To strive to ensure that comparatively significant numbers of students receive an internationally valued post-graduate academic and professional education in their respective fields of study at the University.  Specifically, the target is for the proportion of postgraduate programmes to expand at all levels in identified niche and relevant subject areas and for the numbers of postgraduate students to be increased to meet clients needs, including the Governments short and long term man power development plans ”.


Objectives

  • To formulate policies, guidelines and regulations on Postgraduate Studies in consultation with the Vice Chancellor, for consideration and endorsement by the University Academic Board and Council, where applicable.
  • To monitor and review from time to time the development of Postgraduate programmes to make recommendations on changes for consideration and approval of the University Academic Board.
  • To deal with any matters pertaining to postgraduate studies matters as referred to by the University Academic Board and Council.
  • To work together with the Admissions and Student Records Section and the international Office in all maters pertaining to post graduate admissions and marketing/promotion of Postgraduate programmes.

Administrative Information

Criteria for admission vary from degree to degree but in general the requirements are:

  • A credit average in the previous degree
  • Two years of prior professional experience

The Education Faculty requires a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 (Distinction or B average) in the final year of the BEd or in the Post Graduate Diploma in Education for entry into the BEdHons.
From time to time the University advertises information about enrolment dates in the national newspapers. Applicants are normally notified whether or not they have been recommended for admissions within two months of the closing dates for enrolments.
